The Importance of Finding Magic In This World

by Shreya

As a child I liked Harry Potter,
I waited to find out that I was a wizard,
The day never came,
yet my faith never shook.

As a child I liked the tales of Narnia,
I waited to stumble upon a magical land,
The day never came,
yet my faith never shook.

As a child I liked the X-Men movies,
I waited for my genes to slowly mutate and unravel my superpowers,
The day never came,
yet my faith never shook.

As a child I liked the Princess Diaries,
I waited for someone to tell me that I was secretly the heir to a tiny European country,
The day never came,
yet my faith never shook.

As a child I kept waiting,
as an adult I grew tired of it,
yet my faith never shook.

As an adult I discovered,
Everything that you want,
everything that you have ever wanted,
is right here and now.

I discovered that you don’t need a wand to create magic,
I brought my 5 year old sister a book of tales,
tales of real women achieving the greatest of heights and watched her light up,
if that isn’t magic, I don’t know what is.

I discovered that the earth we inhabit is just a sphere full of life floating around a ball of fire,
Filled with creatures big and small, odd and uneven,
Doing their own thing,
If that isn’t stumbling upon a magical land, I don’t know what is.

I discovered that heroes can be defined outside of comic books,
That moving hearts with your words,
can be better than moving mountains with your mind,,
If that isn’t a superpower, I don’t know what is.

I discovered, slowly but strongly, that I don’t have to be a princess,
But I have to be a leader,
That the smallest of acts that spring from the warmest of places,
can affect people more than commands from a throne.

As a child I thought I was smart,
As an adult I realized I wasn’t,
but through unshaken faith,
I slowly discovered that waiting is silly.
