The Love of My Life

Jem Tovey

With apologies to Elizabeth Barratt Browning,
I’ve discovered the antidote to sadness and frowning.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,
You’re in my heart eternally, this is not a passing phase.

I love our long walks together, you never bitch or moan,
About the scenery or the weather, you’re just content to roam
I love it when you greet me with enthusiastic passion,
When God gave out exuberance, you got twice the usual ration.

I love that you’re “low-maintenance”, your tastes aren’t complicated,
Your requirements are prosaic, your moods easily translated.
I’d take you with me everywhere, but some doormen shake their head,
I suppose we’ll have to stay at home and snuggle up instead.

This poem’s in present perfect tense, it should really be in past,
After that dreaded diagnosis, you went downhill quite fast.
We were perfect partners Ollie, truly hand in glove,
And I’ll wear your name forever, in tribute to our love.
