Time Waits For No Woman

by Judith Greenwood

On Monday I got ready for the bus.

As I set off, I found a little stone

In my right shoe. I took it out.

That made me late.

I missed the bus.

On Tuesday I got ready for the bus.

The neighbour phoned to say

He’d lost his cat.

I said I’d search my shed.

It made me late.

I missed the bus.

On Wednesday I got ready for the bus.

The battery in the kitchen clock

Was dead. I changed it, but

It made me late again.

I missed the bus.

On Thursday I got ready for the bus.

I went to lock the porch and found a bee.

I tried to let it out. It wouldn’t leave.

So I was late again.

I missed the bus.

On Friday I got ready for the bus.

The meter reader came. He couldn’t bend

To see inside the cupboard, as his knee was playing up.

I read the meter for him

And it made me late again.

I missed the bus.

On Saturday I got ready for the bus.

But as I left the house, the rain came on.

I thought, “I’ve just time to get my coat.”

It turned out that I hadn’t “just got time”.

And all I got was wet. And, late again,

I missed the bus.

Today when I got ready for the bus

Nothing went wrong.

I made it bang on time.

There was no bus. It’s Sunday.
