I Can Vote In A Government

by Mohamed Saloo

Torrents of abuse
Flash in the battles of parliament
Cheap kicks and jibes
In the playground of masters
The playing fields for cameras
Recording nonsensical behaviour
Smirks in suits
Whilst the public struggle for a crust
Shouting in silence
The public, with views ignored
Political misdirection
In stock answers and party lines
Frustrated with apathy
Sunk heads will walk away
Sunk hearts fall further
As hopelessness sets in

Bringeth the election season
An emptied house in purdah
Garden boards planted on posts
To harvest political ambition
Pamphlet drops and letterbox knocks
To summon my starving thoughts
Door step debates of political wish
The candidate nodding-ly listens
I am tired of hearing austerity
Whilst austerity is not for all
And education in rising costs
For tax dodgers have not been caught
What of health and hospitals
Will you truly deliver your promise
And what are bankers bonuses
Are they not paid a living wage
The curbing of civil liberties
Do we live in a McCarthy time
My depleted beloved town centre
Where shops have faded away
Families in need of food banks
To tide over? In 2017?
And why do we sell those bullets
That penetrate the innocent child

Frustration succumbs to reveal
A basic democratic thought

I can vote in a government
A whisper begins inside
I can vote in a government
Who governs hope for all
I can vote in a government
To end Punch and Judy parliaments
I can vote in a government
To counter the hopeless apathy
I can vote in a government
Who listen when the public speak
I can vote in a government
For the many and not the few
I can vote in a government
For education, for health, for jobs
I can vote in a government
To rebuild my down trodden town
I can vote in a government
Who stands on ethical views
I can vote in a government
Who stop the sale of murder
I can vote in a government
Who are held to deliver their promise
I can vote in a government
For I am the vote they want

And if my vote succeeds or fails
At least I can say
I tried to vote in a government
Than let my vote just fade.
